Fortnite V-Bucks Guide: V-Bucks Cards, Gift Cards and Refunds

A plain guide to Fortnite V-Bucks: what they buy, how V-Bucks cards differ from the new Fortnite gift cards, how to redeem each, region and Switch rules, refunds and Return Tickets, and parental spending controls.

Fortnite V-Bucks Guide: V-Bucks Cards, Gift Cards and Refunds

Key takeaways

Fortnite is Epic Games' free-to-play, cross-platform game, home to Battle Royale and many other modes and player-made islands. V-Bucks are its in-game currency: they buy outfits, emotes and other Item Shop cosmetics, plus the Battle Pass. You can buy V-Bucks in the game, redeem a V-Bucks card, or add a Fortnite gift card to your Epic account balance.

In this guide

Buying V-Bucks sounds simple until you meet the details: two different kinds of prepaid card, a shared wallet that skips Nintendo Switch, card regions that must match your Epic account, and refund rules that depend on where you paid. This guide walks through all of it, for players and for the parents funding them, with links to Epic Games' own pages for every fact.

What is Fortnite?

Fortnite is a free-to-play game from Epic Games that runs on consoles, PC, phones and cloud gaming services, with the same account and cosmetics everywhere. Most people know it for Battle Royale, where you drop onto an island with 99 other players, survive the ever-closing Storm and try to be the last one standing for a Victory Royale. Today it is also a platform: Epic runs several of its own modes, and players publish their own games, called islands, which anyone can play.

What the Item Shop sells are cosmetic items, as Epic's store pages call them: outfits, emotes, pickaxes and the like, which change how your character looks. The passes unlock more of them, plus extra rewards, as you play. For most players, spending is a question of taste and budget.

Fortnite modes and islands

At the time of writing, Fortnite's official site lists these Epic-made modes:

  • Battle Royale: the 100-player mode, with a Zero Build version (no building) and a Ranked version where you climb towards Unreal.
  • Reload: 40-player squad matches where eliminated teammates reboot while the squad is still active.
  • Blitz Royale: 32 players on a smaller map, with no building and faster games.
  • Fortnite OG: the Chapter 1 map, iconic loot and legendary events.
  • LEGO Fortnite Odyssey: open LEGO worlds where you build homesteads, recruit villagers, gather resources and craft.
  • Fortnite Festival: play music by real artists in a band or solo, using Jam Tracks.
  • Save the World: the cooperative player-versus-environment campaign against monster hordes.

Beyond these, creators build islands with Fortnite Creative and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN): party games, box fights, role-play cities, horror maps and much more. Each island has its own age rating, which matters for the parental controls covered below. Epic's modes rotate, so check the game for what is live.

V-Bucks: what they buy

V-Bucks are Fortnite's in-game currency. Epic's support pages describe three places to spend or buy Fortnite content: the in-game store, the Fortnite Web Shop and the Epic Games Store. With V-Bucks you can buy:

  • Item Shop cosmetics: outfits, back blings, pickaxes, gliders, emotes and more, which rotate regularly.
  • Passes: the Battle Pass, plus the LEGO Pass, Music Pass and OG Pass.
  • Jam Tracks for Fortnite Festival.

Anything you buy with V-Bucks lands in your Locker and is available on every platform where you play Fortnite with that account.

The Battle Pass and other passes

Each season everyone gets a Free Pass, and anyone can buy the Battle Pass, which unlocks premium rewards as you level up. Epic's support page states that the Battle Royale Battle Pass costs 800 V-Bucks from 19 March 2026. Both the Free Pass and the Battle Pass award V-Bucks as you progress, according to Epic's guide to getting V-Bucks.

Fortnite Crew

Fortnite Crew is a monthly subscription. According to Epic's Crew page, active members receive:

  • A monthly Crew Pack: an exclusive outfit and at least one matching accessory, yours to keep.
  • The current Battle Pass, plus the OG Pass, LEGO Pass and Music Pass, for as long as you stay subscribed.
  • 800 V-Bucks every month.

Crew renews automatically until you cancel. Epic states that Crew subscriptions bought directly through Epic cannot be refunded; if you cancel, you keep the benefits until the end of the paid month.

Other ways to get V-Bucks

Epic lists direct purchases in the game, V-Bucks cards, Fortnite Crew, Starter and Quest Packs, and progress through the Free Pass and Battle Pass as the ways to get V-Bucks. There is no other free route.

V-Bucks cards vs Fortnite gift cards

This is where most confusion comes from, because Epic is in the middle of replacing one card with another.

V-Bucks cards

A V-Bucks card is a prepaid card that redeems for a set number of V-Bucks, and only V-Bucks. You redeem it at fortnite.com/vbuckscard and choose which platform the V-Bucks go to. On PC, Switch and mobile they are ready to spend right away; on PlayStation and Xbox, the site generates a second code that you must enter in your Sony or Microsoft account to finish.

Fortnite gift cards

From June 2025, Epic began rolling out Fortnite gift cards, which will replace V-Bucks cards over time. Instead of V-Bucks, a Fortnite gift card adds money to your Epic account balance. Epic's gift card FAQ says that balance can buy V-Bucks, Fortnite Crew and Packs, Epic Games Store games and add-ons, and Fab content for creators. V-Bucks cards may still be sold in some regions while the rollout continues.

Regions and currencies

  • V-Bucks cards: the country where you bought the card must match the country on your Epic Games account, and Epic does not let you change your account country to use a card from somewhere else.
  • Fortnite gift cards: they are currency-specific, so the card's currency must match the currency of your Epic account balance. At the time of writing, Epic's FAQ lists them in a set of countries across Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific and the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and says more regions will follow.

The Shared Wallet and Nintendo Switch

Most platforms share purchased V-Bucks through the Fortnite Shared Wallet, but V-Bucks bought on Nintendo Switch stay on Switch, and V-Bucks bought on other platforms do not appear on Switch. The same applies to V-Bucks bought with your Epic balance from a Fortnite gift card: they are available on every platform except Nintendo. The items you buy, however, appear in your Locker on all platforms, so a Switch player can buy items in the web Item Shop instead.

Rule of thumb: if you play mainly on Switch, spend V-Bucks bought on Switch or buy items through the web Item Shop. If you play on PlayStation, Xbox, PC or mobile, V-Bucks bought on any of those follow you between them.

Your Epic Games account

Your Epic Games account is what ties everything together: your V-Bucks balance, your Locker and your progress across devices. If you play on a console, link that console account to your Epic account so purchases and progress follow you. Epic's card pages repeatedly warn to check which account you are signed in to before redeeming, because the V-Bucks go to that account.

Two rules matter here. First, keep the country on your account accurate: Epic ties features, card redemption and balance currency to it. Second, the account is yours alone. Epic's Terms of Service say you may not share your account credentials, and you cannot sell, give away or trade your account; sharing an account can lead to suspension or termination. The same terms say a parent with their own account should give a child a separate account.

How to top up V-Bucks, step by step

There are three official families of routes: buy V-Bucks inside Fortnite (or on the Fortnite Web Shop or Epic Games Store), redeem a V-Bucks card, or redeem a Fortnite gift card and spend the balance. The Nexus sells gift card codes, which you then redeem yourself.

Option 1: buy in the game

  1. Open Fortnite and go to the V-Bucks tab.
  2. Select the amount of V-Bucks you want.
  3. Complete the order. On PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, payment goes through that console's store; on PC and mobile, through Epic's payment system or the app store, depending on how you installed the game.

Option 2: redeem a V-Bucks card

These are Epic's official steps:

  1. Sign in and check your Account Settings: the display name must match the one you use in the game.
  2. Open the V-Bucks card redemption page at fortnite.com/vbuckscard and select Get Started.
  3. Scratch the back of the card carefully and enter the PIN without dashes, then select Next.
  4. Choose the platform for the V-Bucks. Only platforms linked to the signed-in account appear.
  5. Check the account, device and new balance, then select Confirm.
  6. On PlayStation or Xbox, enter the second code you are given on the Sony or Microsoft site to finish.

Option 3: redeem a Fortnite gift card

These are Epic's steps for Fortnite gift cards:

  1. Scan the QR code on the card, or go to epicgames.com/redeem and enter the PIN.
  2. Sign in with your Epic account, or the console account you play with.
  3. Confirm the account details and link any other accounts if asked.
  4. Select Redeem now to add the balance.
  5. Spend it: buy V-Bucks on the Epic Games Store, or in Fortnite on PC, mobile or cloud gaming, choosing Account Balance at checkout.

Your balance can be combined with another payment method if it does not cover the whole price, except for subscriptions such as Fortnite Crew.

Option 4: buy a code on The Nexus

If paying Epic or a console store directly is difficult where you live, a code lets you pay locally and redeem on Epic's own site. On The Nexus:

  1. Open our Fortnite hub, or browse Epic Games gift cards.
  2. Check the product page before paying: it states the card type, its region or currency, and that delivery is a code you redeem yourself. Make sure the region or currency matches your Epic account.
  3. Pay with one of the methods shown at checkout. In Egypt these include Vodafone Cash and InstaPay.
  4. When the order is marked delivered, copy the code from your private order page.
  5. Redeem it on Epic's page, following Option 2 or 3 above.

What Epic says about third-party sellers. Epic's support page says it does not partner with any third-party V-Bucks sellers, cannot refund or grant V-Bucks for purchases from unauthorised sellers, and lists its own stores and official V-Bucks cards from authorised retailers as the routes it supports. With a code you never share your login, but if a code has a problem, your recourse is the seller, not Epic. Redeem soon after delivery, keep your order page, and read our refund policy before you buy.

Console players can also use platform gift cards: a PlayStation Store card, an Xbox gift card or a Nintendo eShop card adds funds to the console wallet, which then pays for V-Bucks bought in the game on that console.

Refunds, cancellations and Return Tickets

Epic's refund page describes two self-service options for Item Shop purchases made with V-Bucks:

  • Cancel Purchase: undo a purchase within 24 hours, as long as you have not used or equipped the item in any mode. Your V-Bucks come back, and each item can only be cancelled once.
  • Return Tickets: return eligible items within the window shown on Epic's refund page. Every account starts with 3, gains 1 new ticket every 365 days, and can hold 3 at most. Support cannot grant extra tickets.

Some purchases cannot be cancelled or returned at all, including passes and pass levels, gifts and purchases made in player-made islands. Bundles must be returned whole. To cancel or return, open Fortnite, select your player icon, open the menu, choose Support and Refunds, then Return or cancel purchase.

Refunds of real money are a separate matter. Purchases made on a console or a mobile store other than Epic's are handled by that store under its own policy. For purchases through Epic's payment system, the Epic Games Store refund policy says virtual currency, in-game items and subscriptions are usually non-refundable unless the law requires otherwise, and that the account balance itself cannot be refunded.

Parental controls for Fortnite

Epic's parental controls apply across Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys on every platform, and are protected by a six-digit PIN. You can set them up from inside Fortnite: select the player icon, open the menu, choose Parental Controls, confirm a parent's email address and create the PIN.

Spending controls

  • Require a PIN for Epic Games payments: real-money purchases through Epic's payment system need your PIN.
  • Allow Paid Random Items: choose whether your child can spend V-Bucks on items with a random reward.
  • Daily limit for under-13s: Epic applies a $100 daily spending limit on Epic payments for players who say they are under 13; purchases above it need the parent's PIN.

Console purchases are not covered. Epic says its daily limit does not apply to payments on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch or Steam, and does not limit spending V-Bucks already on the account. Set spending controls on the console as well, and consider prepaid cards as a fixed allowance.

Other controls

  • Content ratings: every island has a rating, and you can block islands above a chosen rating.
  • Social permissions: voice chat, text chat, mature-language filtering and a PIN for friend requests.
  • Time limits and reports: daily play and create time limits, and weekly email reports.

Younger players may start in a Cabined Account, which blocks features such as voice chat until a parent gives consent. Epic says Cabined Account players can still add a Fortnite gift card to their balance for Epic's games, but not for Fortnite Crew until a parent finishes setting up the account.

Scams and account safety

"Free V-Bucks" is one of the most common bait lines in gaming. Epic's advice is to not trust offers of free V-Bucks on external sites; real offers appear only in the Epic Games Store and on Epic's official websites and social channels.

  • Never give anyone your Epic password. Epic's terms forbid sharing account credentials, and sellers who ask for your login are putting your account at risk.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication on your Epic account and use a unique password.
  • Redeem codes only on Epic's own pages: fortnite.com/vbuckscard for V-Bucks cards and epicgames.com/redeem for Fortnite gift cards.
  • Never buy or sell a Fortnite account. Epic's terms say accounts cannot be sold, given away or traded.
  • Check the card type before you buy. A V-Bucks card and a Fortnite gift card redeem differently and have different region rules.
  • Keep receipts and order pages until the V-Bucks are on your account; support may ask for them.

How we keep this guide accurate

Every statement in this guide about how Fortnite, V-Bucks, Fortnite Crew, V-Bucks cards, Fortnite gift cards, refunds and parental controls work comes from Epic Games' own websites and support pages, linked in the text and listed in the sources below, and was checked against them on the date shown at the top. Epic is still rolling out Fortnite gift cards and adjusts pass prices and Crew contents over time, so we review this page after major changes. We do not quote V-Bucks prices here because they vary by platform and country; see the current options on our Fortnite page and in our gift card catalogue. If you spot something out of date, use the correction link at the end of the article.

Frequently asked questions

What can you buy with V-Bucks in Fortnite?

V-Bucks buy Item Shop cosmetics such as outfits, emotes, pickaxes and gliders, the Battle Pass and other passes, and Jam Tracks. Items bought with V-Bucks are available on every platform where you play with that account.

How do I redeem a V-Bucks card?

Go to fortnite.com/vbuckscard, sign in to the right Epic account, enter the PIN without dashes and choose the platform for your V-Bucks. On PlayStation and Xbox you then enter a second code on the Sony or Microsoft site to finish.

What is the difference between a V-Bucks card and a Fortnite gift card?

A V-Bucks card redeems for a set number of V-Bucks only. A Fortnite gift card adds money to your Epic account balance, which can buy V-Bucks, Fortnite Crew, packs and Epic Games Store games. Epic is gradually replacing V-Bucks cards with Fortnite gift cards.

Why can’t I see my V-Bucks on Nintendo Switch?

Nintendo Switch does not support the Fortnite Shared Wallet. V-Bucks bought on Switch stay on Switch, and V-Bucks bought elsewhere, including with an Epic balance, do not appear there. Items you buy still show in your Locker on all platforms.

Can I use a V-Bucks card from another country?

No. The country where the V-Bucks card was bought must match the country on your Epic Games account, and Epic does not allow changing your account country to redeem a foreign card. Fortnite gift cards must match the currency of your Epic account balance.

Can I get my V-Bucks back after buying an item?

Often, yes. Cancel Purchase undoes an Item Shop purchase within 24 hours if you have not used the item. After that, a Return Ticket can return eligible items within the window Epic's refund page shows; each account holds up to three. Passes and gifts cannot be returned.

How much is the Fortnite Battle Pass?

Epic’s support page says the Battle Royale Battle Pass costs 800 V-Bucks from 19 March 2026. Fortnite Crew subscribers get the Battle Pass, other passes and 800 V-Bucks each month for as long as they stay subscribed.

Are free V-Bucks websites real?

No. Epic advises not to trust offers of free V-Bucks on external sites; real offers only appear in the Epic Games Store and on Epic’s official sites and channels. Such sites usually aim to steal your Epic login.
