What is Genshin Impact?
Genshin Impact is HoYoverse's open-world adventure game. You play as a Traveler exploring Teyvat, a world split into nations with their own regions, stories and elemental themes, and you build a party from a large cast of characters whose elemental skills combine into reactions in combat. The game was announced for release on 28 September 2020 on iOS, Android and PC, and it has since added PlayStation and Xbox. It is free to download; the App Store listing shows it as free with in-app purchases.
The story keeps moving with versions released every few weeks. Version 7.0 took players to Snezhnaya, the seventh nation of Teyvat, and Version 7.1, "A Rekviem for the Underworld", launched on 23 September 2026 alongside the game's sixth anniversary. HoYoverse's release notes say that with cross-progression and co-op you can continue the same adventure across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Android and iOS.
Before you think about spending, check your device. HoYoverse's system requirements page lists at least 110 GB of free storage on PC, 40 GB on Android and iOS, and 150 GB on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and warns that storage needs grow with updates. A top-up will not help if the game will not run smoothly on your hardware.
How Genshin Impact plays
Most of your time goes into exploring the open world, following the Archon Quests that carry the main story, clearing Domains for upgrade materials, and taking on events that come and go with each version. You control a party of up to four characters and switch between them in combat; combining their elements, for example water and ice, triggers reactions that do more than either element alone. Friends can join your world in co-op.
Adventure Rank and when spending unlocks
Your Adventure Rank rises as you play. According to HoYoverse, the in-game Shop and the Wish feature unlock once you complete the Archon Quest "Knights of Favonius" and reach Adventure Rank 5. Until then, you cannot buy Genesis Crystals inside the game or make Wishes, so there is no reason to top up on your first day.
Wishes, in plain words
Wishes are Genshin Impact's way of handing out characters and weapons: each Wish gives you one random item, with 5-star items the rarest. HoYoverse publishes the rules and odds on the in-game Details page of each Wish. Its help centre explains the counter that players call "pity": on the Character Event Wish you receive a 5-star character within 90 wishes, with a 50% chance that it is the featured character, and if it is not, the next 5-star you win on that banner is the featured one. The two Character Event Wish banners share the same counter. On the Weapon Event Wish the 5-star arrives within 80 wishes. The permanent Standard Wish, "Wanderlust Invocation", keeps its own count.
Before you spend: open your Wish history and count how many wishes you have made since your last 5-star on that banner. Knowing where your counter stands tells you how far you are from the next 5-star, which is a better guide to how much you need than any bundle banner.
Servers, UIDs and why they matter for top-ups
Genshin Impact runs separate servers. HoYoverse's own FAQ lists them as Asia, Europe, America and TW, HK, MO, and one HoYoverse account can have progress on several of those servers at once. Each of those game profiles has its own UID.
- Account ID and UID are different. HoYoverse explains that the Account ID belongs to your HoYoverse account, while the UID is your ID inside a game, and one Account ID may contain multiple UIDs.
- Servers cannot be changed. Once a game account is created on a server, it cannot be moved: progress, characters and purchases stay on that server, and data from different servers cannot be combined. You can still log in from any country.
- Consoles follow their own rule. On PlayStation, the store region of your PSN account decides which server you reach, while on Xbox you pick the server when you log in.
- Purchases now carry across platforms. Since Version 5.8, HoYoverse says Genesis Crystals bought on PlayStation and on other platforms are shared in one balance, provided your HoYoverse account has completed cross-save.
For top-ups this means one thing: the UID and server you enter must be the exact profile you play on. A top-up sent to the right UID on the wrong server, or to an old profile, lands somewhere you are not playing, and HoYoverse cannot move it.
Genesis Crystals, Primogems and Fates explained
HoYoverse describes Genshin Impact as having two main currencies. Here is how they fit together with the Fate items that Wishes use:
| Item | How you get it | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Genesis Crystals | Bought with real money in the in-game shop or on the Official Top-up Page | Converting into Primogems, one Crystal for one Primogem |
| Primogems | Earned from missions, events and in-game mail, or converted from Genesis Crystals | Making Wishes |
| Intertwined Fate | Game rewards, such as the Intertwined Fate ×10 in the sixth-anniversary rewards | Event Wishes; HoYoverse notes, for example, that the Chronicled Wish requires Intertwined Fate |
| Acquaint Fate | Game rewards | The other Fate item; the Wish screen shows which Fate each banner takes |
The key rule is simple: Primogems cannot be bought directly. You buy Genesis Crystals, and they convert into Primogems at a one-to-one ratio. That is why every "Primogem top-up" you see sold anywhere is really a Genesis Crystal top-up. Free-to-play players earn Primogems steadily through quests and events; update notes also hand out compensation Primogems, such as the maintenance compensation in Version 7.1, so spending is a way to go faster, not the only way to get characters.
Why the numbers on packs differ from what you receive
Genesis Crystal packs come in fixed tiers, and the amount credited can include a bonus. The first-purchase double bonus, explained below, is the main reason two players buying the same tier can receive different totals. Pack sizes and local prices also depend on your platform and region, so we do not print prices here; they change, and a number printed in a guide soon becomes wrong. Current packs are listed on our Genshin Impact hub.
Welkin Moon, Battle Pass and the first-purchase bonus
Blessing of the Welkin Moon
The Blessing of the Welkin Moon is a 30-day pass. According to HoYoverse, you receive 300 Genesis Crystals when you buy it, and then 90 Primogems for each day you log in during the 30 days. The daily login is required: a day you miss is lost, and the 30-day period is not extended. There is no direct gifting inside the game; HoYoverse says to buy it for a friend through official websites and official top-up partners such as Codashop, entering the friend's UID and checking the server carefully.
The Battle Pass: Gnostic Hymn and Gnostic Chorus
Genshin Impact's Battle Pass has paid tiers called the Gnostic Hymn and the Gnostic Chorus. HoYoverse sells them through two official channels, the in-game shop and the Official Top-up Page, and notes that the pass is briefly unavailable before each version update. If you buy the same pass twice, the duplicate is converted into Genesis Crystals rather than wasted. You can also buy the pass and the Welkin Moon while travelling, but HoYoverse warns that availability and pricing may vary by region and platform.
The first-purchase double bonus
The first time you buy each Genesis Crystal tier, the Crystal Top-up screen shows a double bonus. HoYoverse calls it a one-time offer that may be reset during special events; the last reset we could confirm on an official page came with Version 4.1 in September 2023. To see whether a tier still has its bonus, open the Paimon Menu, go to Shop, then Crystal Top-up, and look at the "Bonus" label on each pack. HoYoverse describes this bonus on the in-game Crystal Top-up screen; on any other route, rely only on what that page says you will receive before you pay.
How to top up Genesis Crystals, step by step
There are three official ways to pay HoYoverse, plus store routes such as The Nexus. All of them end with Genesis Crystals on a UID; they differ in who you pay, which payment methods you can use and who can help if something goes wrong.
Option 1: the in-game shop
- Make sure you have reached Adventure Rank 5 and finished "Knights of Favonius".
- Open the Paimon Menu, choose Shop, then Crystal Top-up.
- Pick a pack and pay through your platform's store: Google Play, the App Store, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store or the PC payment options.
- Restart the game if the balance does not update. HoYoverse says to allow up to 24 hours for delayed orders before contacting support.
Option 2: HoYoverse's Official Top-up Page
- Go to the Official HoYoverse Top-Up Center for Genshin Impact, the address HoYoverse's help centre links to.
- Log in with your game account and select the correct server and game account.
- Choose Genesis Crystals, the Welkin Moon or the Battle Pass, and pay with one of the methods offered for your region.
Option 3: a platform gift card, then Option 1
If your problem is payment rather than the game, you can stay on an official channel by adding balance to your platform's store: a Google Play gift card on Android, an App Store gift card on iPhone or iPad, or a PlayStation gift card on PS5. Redeem the card in that store, then buy Genesis Crystals inside the game. The card has to match your store account's country.
Option 4: UID top-up through The Nexus
The Nexus sells Genshin Impact top-ups delivered to your UID; you never give us your password. It works like this:
- Open our Genshin Impact hub and pick the pack you want.
- Enter your UID and choose your server exactly as they appear in the game. Check both twice; this is the most common cause of a failed delivery.
- Read the delivery method shown on the product page before you pay.
- Pay with one of the methods shown at checkout. In Egypt they include Vodafone Cash and InstaPay.
- Follow your order page until it is marked delivered, then check your balance in the game.
Read this before choosing a third-party route, including ours. HoYoverse recommends using only its official channels. Its Terms of Service list top-ups through channels or third parties not endorsed or approved by COGNOSPHERE among prohibited behaviour, and its help centre says it cannot help with purchases made through unauthorized channels. The Nexus is not HoYoverse. HoYoverse offers to confirm whether a payment service is an authorised partner if you send its link to customer support. If you can pay through Options 1 to 3, those keep you inside HoYoverse's supported channels.
Ways to get Genesis Crystals compared
| Route | Who you pay | What you share | First-purchase bonus | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-game shop | Your platform store (Google, Apple, Sony, Microsoft) or HoYoverse on PC | Nothing extra | Shown on the Crystal Top-up screen | Needs a payment method your store accepts in your country |
| Official Top-up Page | HoYoverse | You log in to your own account | Check the page before paying | Choose the right server and account before paying |
| Platform gift card, then in-game | The card seller, then your platform store | Nothing extra | As in the in-game shop | The card must match your store country |
| Official partners such as Codashop | The partner | UID and server | Check the partner's page | HoYoverse names Codashop as an official top-up partner |
| The Nexus, UID top-up | The Nexus | UID and server, never your password | Only what the product page states | Local payment methods; outside HoYoverse's own channels, so read the warning above |
| Playing for free | Nobody | Nothing | Not applicable | Primogems from quests, events and compensation; slower but costs nothing |
Refunds, minors and failed top-ups
Refunds. HoYoverse's position is that under its Terms of Service purchases of digital goods are final once they are delivered or credited, and it asks you to contact customer support only if you believe special circumstances apply. Purchases made through an app store may also be covered by that store's own rules. If someone topped up with your payment method without permission, HoYoverse explains how to request a refund for unauthorized top-ups by emailing its payment support with proof of the transaction and your UID. For orders placed with us, read our refund policy.
Minors. Section 6 of the Terms of Service says that a player under the age of majority in their country may not accept the agreement unless a parent or legal guardian reviews and accepts it for them. In the United States, the terms add that players under 16 should get a parent's or guardian's express consent before any in-game purchase with real money. The terms also ask parents never to let children use the service unsupervised. If you are buying for a child, use your own payment method and set spending limits in the platform store.
A purchase that did not arrive. Restart the game and check your platform's purchase history first. HoYoverse's steps for a failed Genesis Crystal purchase include turning off any VPN or proxy on PC and, on mobile, making sure your payment method's country matches your location and that the game was installed from your region's app store. If the order still has not arrived, support needs your UID, server, order ID and payment method.
Protecting your account when you spend
- Never share your password. A top-up needs only your UID and server. HoYoverse's account security page also asks players not to buy, sell or share accounts.
- Do not buy or sell accounts. The Terms of Service say accounts may not be transferred or shared, and that selling one can lead to termination without refund.
- Match the UID and the server. Servers cannot be merged or transferred, so a top-up on the wrong one cannot be moved.
- Ignore "free Primogems" generators. Primogems come from playing, from official events or from Genesis Crystals; pages that promise them for a login are after your account.
- Turn on two-factor authentication and use a unique password and an email address you will keep, as HoYoverse recommends.
- Keep receipts and order pages. They are what any support team, including ours, needs to trace a delayed top-up.
Buying through The Nexus? Our product pages show the delivery method before you pay, checkout shows the payment methods available where you are, and your order page tracks each step. Questions before or after an order are answered on our FAQ.
How we keep this guide accurate
Every statement in this guide about how Genshin Impact, its servers, currencies, passes and policies work is based on HoYoverse's own pages, linked in the text and listed in the sources below, and was checked against them on the date shown at the top of the article, shortly after Version 7.1 launched. Pass names, bonus resets and purchase rules can change with any version, so we review this page after each major update. If you spot something that has changed, use the correction link at the end of the article and we will fix it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Genesis Crystals and Primogems?
Genesis Crystals are the premium currency you buy with real money in the in-game shop or on the Official Top-up Page. Primogems are the currency you spend on Wishes; you earn them by playing or get them by converting Genesis Crystals at a one-to-one ratio.
Can I buy Primogems directly?
No. HoYoverse says Primogems cannot be purchased directly. You buy Genesis Crystals and convert them into Primogems, one Crystal for one Primogem.
What do I need for a Genshin Impact top-up?
Your UID and the server your profile is on: America, Europe, Asia or TW/HK/MO. One HoYoverse account can have a different UID on each server, and servers cannot be transferred, so enter the exact profile you play on.
When can I start buying Genesis Crystals in the game?
The in-game Shop and Wishes unlock after you complete the Archon Quest "Knights of Favonius" and reach Adventure Rank 5. Before that there is nothing in the game to spend Genesis Crystals on.
What does the Blessing of the Welkin Moon give?
According to HoYoverse, 300 Genesis Crystals when you buy it and 90 Primogems for each day you log in during the next 30 days. Days you do not log in are lost and the 30 days are not extended.
Is the first-purchase double bonus available again?
The double bonus applies once to each Genesis Crystal tier and can be reset during special events; the last reset we could confirm on an official page came with Version 4.1 in 2023, so rely on the Bonus label. Check the Bonus label on each pack under Shop, then Crystal Top-up.
Can I get a refund on Genesis Crystals?
HoYoverse treats digital purchases as final once they are credited, apart from special circumstances you can raise with its support team. Unauthorized top-ups made with your payment method can be reported to its payment support with proof of the transaction.
Is it allowed to top up Genshin Impact through a third-party store?
HoYoverse recommends only its official channels, and its Terms of Service list top-ups through channels not endorsed or approved by COGNOSPHERE as prohibited. It names Codashop as an official partner and will confirm whether another service is authorised if you send support its link.
