Three common mistakes

1. Building it outside the lanes where reviewed builds use it: Support
2. Buying ability power on a champion whose damage comes from basic attacks.
3. Treating it as the safe first item: it is the first purchase in only 4 / 8 reviewed builds.

Counts come from the reviewed champion builds in the Rift Lab. The three mistakes are Nexus editorial guidance chosen by what this item's data shows, not a statistic.
